In the thesis “The Influence of Different Video Editing Techniques on the Viewer’s Perception”, we explore how different editing techniques – both traditional and contemporary – influence the viewer’s emotional response, perception of time, space and attention.

In the theoretical part, we discuss the development of montage throughout history and present key theoretical approaches, with a particular focus on the distinction between continuous and discontinuous montage. A number of techniques such as jump cut, match cut, cutaway, cross-cut, fade-in/fade-out, tempo editing and various sound transitions were analysed and their impact on the viewer’s perception of the story and emotional experience was highlighted.

The research approach is based on a qualitative method, focusing on case studies, comparative and textual analysis of selected film scenes. Throughout the research, four hypotheses were formulated, focusing on the relationship between editing pacing, discontinuity, the use of artificial intelligence and the emotional impact on the viewer.

In the practical part, we created a short trailer in the psychological thriller genre, entirely generated with the help of AI. Using selected editing techniques such as slow and fast cuts, jump cuts, J-cut and L-cut, fade transitions and digital zooms, we tested the impact of editing on tension, suspense and perceptual activity of the viewer.

Various AI tools were used for both image and video generation, allowing us to create without a traditional production team, but with certain limitations in visual quality and consistency.

The analysis if the product confirmed that both fast and slow editing can have a strong emotional impact, that techniques that break continuity increase tension, and that AI is a useful tool, but one that requires human judgement and control. We conclude that editing fundamentally shapes the cinematic experience and that knowledge of editing effects is crucial for any audiovisual content creator.
