The art of photographing sculptures and the preparation of a monograph

In the world of art, photography plays an important role in the documentation, preservation, analysis, and presentation of works of art. The aim of this thesis is to explore how to successfully photograph sculptures and to examine their significance in monographs.

I will address both theoretical and practical aspects, from the definition of what a sculpture is, its significance in art, types of photography techniques, and photo editing, to the design and publication of a monograph as a final product.

Sculptures, due to their three-dimensional nature, pose a challenge for photographers, as it is necessary to capture their shape, materiality, and texture. When photographing sculptures, it is not just about the technical capabilities of photography and capturing the subject, but also about having a deeper understanding of art and the specific characteristics of sculptural works.

A photograph of a sculpture is considered successful when the viewer can recognize its shape, material used, texture, and the artist’s message from the photograph.

The key elements in this process include camera settings, the choice of appropriate equipment, photography techniques, and composition. The correct use of lighting and perspective highlights specific elements of the sculpture, creates dramatic effects, or reveals interesting and important details that might otherwise remain unnoticed.

Image processing and post-production also contribute to the success of the final product, as they allow for the correction of colors, contrasts, and other elements that enhance the best presentation of the sculpture.

Monographs, as artistic publications, play an important role as a medium for documenting and disseminating works of art and the thoughts of artists. A monograph is an in-depth study that combines visual and textual content to best present the artist, their work, and their influence on the artistic field. Designing a monograph is a lengthy process that requires careful planning of content, the selection of appropriate visual material, and suitable aesthetic design that will attract the reader and enable them to understand the content.

This thesis also includes an analysis of two selected monographs: Napotnik and Rodin: A Magnificent Obsession. Based on their content and structural design, I will compare them with my own monograph design.
