Erasmus+ short-term mobility: interdisciplinary exchange of Academia students at the University of Algebra Bernays in Zagreb

As part of a short-term Erasmus+ mobility, a group of seven Academia students from Media production, Economics, and Computing, had the opportunity to participate in an exchange at Algebra Bernays University in Zagreb.
The group took part in three different Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs): Creative Solutions in Branding, Fundamentals of Video Production, and Project Approach to Applications Development. The mobility combined academic work, intercultural exchange, and personal growth, exceeding initial expectations.

Upon arrival, Zagreb immediately proved to be a welcoming and vibrant city. The students were accommodated in a centrally located hostel, within easy reach of the university by tram or on foot, which enabled smooth daily travel and encouraged exploration of the city. Outside of academic obligations, the group explored Zagreb both together and in smaller groups, discovering the historic old town, local markets, cafés, and social venues.
These informal activities provided a valuable balance to the intensive academic schedule and contributed to group cohesion.
Algebra Bernays University made a strong impression with its modern infrastructure, well-equipped laboratories, and contemporary learning environment. During the exchange, students were placed into international teams, allowing them to collaborate with peers from different cultural and educational backgrounds. The project-based work focused on developing business ideas, creative solutions, and technical skills aligned with their fields of study.
Students gained hands-on experience in pitching ideas, teamwork, and problem-solving, while also strengthening their confidence in interdisciplinary and intercultural collaboration. Constructive feedback from lecturers, local students, and other Erasmus participants further enriched the learning experience.

Beyond academics, the exchange offered meaningful cultural immersion. Students experienced Croatian cuisine, explored the city’s history at the Zagreb City Museum, and learned about the development of Zagreb from its medieval origins to the present day. One notable highlight was learning about the “Uspinjača” funicular railway, one of the shortest in the world and still in operation.
These shared experiences deepened the group’s understanding of local culture and strengthened social connections.
Overall, the Erasmus+ exchange at Algebra Bernays University was a valuable combination of academic development, cultural exploration, and personal growth. The students returned with enhanced professional skills, broadened perspectives, and lasting memories.
The experience demonstrated the importance of stepping outside one’s comfort zone and confirmed the positive impact of international mobility on both academic and personal development.
