Construction & Civil Engineering
The thesis deals with the conceptual design of a single-apartment container building located on a selected site. The aim of the thesis is to design a functional living unit for a family from living containers, which will meet all standards and will allow a quality and comfortable living.
The theoretical part of the thesis presents a historical overview of container construction, the characteristics of modular container construction, its technical characteristics and its advantages and disadvantages compared to other construction methods.
We have also looked at the legislation that must be complied with in the preparation of the documentation and also in the construction itself.
We then looked at reference examples of container construction in Slovenia and around the world, which prove that container construction is as suitable and of the same quality as other construction methods and is not only suitable for temporary buildings or holiday accommodation.
We have also prepared a conceptual design for a single-family house on the selected site. We have demonstrated that containers can also be used to create a building that offers quality and comfortable living, meets modern standards and offers functionality.
Container construction is highly flexible and offers us almost unlimited possibilities to assemble modules according to the wishes and needs of the investor. It allows for gradual construction according to the spatial needs of the user, which change during the life or process.
We have shown how to add containers according to the living needs of a couple and for a family with one and two children.
Finally, we looked at the economic aspect of container construction. We compared the price of container construction with conventional masonry construction up to the third construction phase. We made inventories of the works and compared them from a cost point of view.
Before the final, we also linked to the overarching theme for the current academic year, which was Professional Ethics in Construction. We used an example to describe where we encounter professional ethics in the construction phase of a building.
