Media production

The Student of the year 2021 award for the Media production – module Web Production was awarded to Aljaž Prelec, who was the most successful and also fastest to complete the requirements of the 2019–2021 generation of the Media Production Higher Education professional programme.

1 .What does the title Web Production Engineer Student of the year 2021 mean to you?

“For me, this title is a confirmation that I have done a good job; that I have persevered in my learning and that I have acquired new skills that I never thought I would master.

But the most important thing for me about this title is that it is a formal acknowledgement of my efforts and work.”

2. Why did you choose to study at Academia Maribor?

“Before enrolling at Academia, I attended FERI (The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science), programme Computer Science and Information Technologies.

I quickly realised that this path did not suit me, although the programme contained some very interesting and useful subjects that I would have loved to study further. And it was these subjects that I noticed in your Media Production curriculum”

3. What do you enjoy most about your studies?

“I definitely enjoyed the practical training and the tutorials the most, they were really great. I am very satisfied with the chosen topics  and the professional support!”

4. How does studying at the Academia help you in your career and personal development?

“I attended practical training at the football school of Slovenian premier league team Mura.

Even though I have finished my practical training there, I still help out with various jobs, but my main task is to prepare and edit graphic elements from filming matches for video analysis or live streaming matches online via YouTube.

I’m also in charge of editing and updating the website, where I’ve gained a lot of experience with the CMS (Content Management System) platform for designing and editing websites.”

5. What else do you do while study?

“As a student, I work in the call centre at GMT (Slovenia’s largest car boot company), but I also help out where I can. Although I no longer play at NK Mura, where I played for 10 years, I still love playing football in my free time.”

6. Why is it important for a good web production engineer to have a formal education?

“Formal education is very important to me. It is difficult to get the amount of documented knowledge online that employers are looking for. You can’t learn experience online either.

That’s why I focused my thesis on web production or web design in relation to the internship in my field of study.

I used the game Football Manager™ as a starting point, where coaches create tactical actions or moves via a website.

It’s not so much a simulation of the game itself – initially I want to give younger people a closer look at the work of a professional football player or coach. For now it’s just a website, but there’s a possibility that I’ll turn it into an app in the future.”

7. What advice would you give to prospective students to help them succeed in their studies?

“I would advise prospective students and students, already attending the Academia, to pay attention in lectures, especially in seminars and laboratory exercises.

I speak from my own experience, as it is in the tutorials that I have gained most of my knowledge, which has been very useful to me during my studies and beyond.”

“I would like to thank the professional management of the school for their kindness and that I could always count on them for any help I needed. The school really welcomed me with open arms. Thank you!”
